The Classic Safari Experience at Chobe Safari Lodge

If you're planning a visit to the Chobe region, you'll know that the town of Kasane is not short on luxury accommodation. There are older lodges and comparatively new ones, but all of them were built in the shadow of a place that has become an institution in its own right. Chobe Safari Lodge is the original, the model which others must follow or deviate from. It has occupied the most desirable spot on the Chobe river-front for several decades, and has hosted tens of thousands of discerning adventurers over the years.

With 46 sumptuously appointed safari rooms, 22 luxurious river rooms, 8 rustic rondavels (which date back to the original establishment), and camping facilities spread out under the shade of the surrounding riverine forest, there is an accommodation option to suit any budget.

The rooms, though, tranquil, comfortable and charming as they are, and despite their gorgeous river-views, are the least of it. All guests have access to the full range of Chobe Safari Lodge's facilities and activities, and these are the aspects of your trip that will having you smiling inwardly to yourself for years to come.

The Chobe River is, of course, the centrepiece of this little corner of paradise, and the main restaurant, the pool area and the outdoor cocktail bar occupy a suitably generous expanse of the riverbank. River views and the sights and sounds of nature are the order of the day, from basking hippos and water birds to the thrushes, robins and monkeys in the tree canopy above, all accompanied by the sound of water flowing gently by. Prepare yourself for many arduous hours of painstakingly forcing down sunset drinks and lazing in the deck-chairs by the pool, reading or, even worse, just taking it all in.

A lesser-known spot – and one which is therefore generally a little quieter – is Sedudu Bar, which is situated in the camp-site just a short walk from the main lodge. This little gem overlooks Sedudu Island, which is frequented by herds of grazing elephant and buffalo, and it offers perhaps the finest evening views in town. This is a spot for sundowners par excellence and is an absolute must whether or not you choose to stay at the lodge itself.

It just won't do to spend one's stay in a supine position, though, and the Safari Lodge staff stand ready to whisk you away on game viewing trips into the Chobe National Park to see some of the Chobe region's famed wildlife including plentiful herds of elephant and buffalo, swarms of birds, and potential encounters with some of the area's big cat species. This is just about a mandatory component of any visit, and the lodge's friendly and knowledgeable guides make it all the more worthwhile.

Feeling a little parched during your stay in the African wilderness? Perhaps what you need is a sunset river cruise, a gentle amble up the river into the Chobe National Park, which service is also provided by the good people at Chobe Safari Lodge. Whether it is better to look out over the park from a boat on the river or to survey the river from a vehicle in the park is impossible to say: the only way to make up your mind for yourself is to do both. There are also boats available for private charter, and fishing trips for those hoping to land a famed tiger fish. Trips to the spectacular Victoria Falls are also available on request.

It is an absolute classic, and for very good reason.
